Everyone is addicted! Whenever we ask people what an addiction is, we find out that they almost always have a misguided and misinformed idea. The truth is that there’s no way we’d ever be able to deal with addictions if we are absolutely clueless about what they really are.
When many people think about addictions, the main image that is conjured by their minds is behavioral abnormalities.
While that’s one way of looking at addictions, that’s ultimately the wrong end.
This is why many efforts at dealing with addictions fail – so often we develop programs that cater for behaviors, rather than dealing with the behaviors from their ultimate source.
Everyone Is Addicted Because We Have Brains
Dealing with addictions is just like a man that wants to destroy a tree that is growing at the back of his house.
Month in, month out, he keeps on hacking away at the branches of the tree, not for once paying attention taking so much as a look at the root of the tree. Yet, he’s frustrated that the tree he detests so much doesn’t die.
The truth is that if the man keeps on hacking at the branches of the tree, as long as the root is still intact, the tree can never die.
The tree would only cease to live if its roots are removed from the nutrients in the soil.
Interestingly, when the roots are removed, the branches would also die a very natural death.
The same occurs when we deal with addictions.
We need to focus on the roots of the addiction rather than the behavioral anomalies that the addictions cause.
And when we talk about the root of addictions, there’s no other place that qualifies for that position other than the Brain!
Lose an eye, you’d still live.
Lose an arm, you’d still live.
Lose your brain, and you might as well just go and rest in peace.
Believe it or not, it’s very true.
Everyone Is Addicted Because Addictions Are Amoral
Before we would be able to deal with addictions and bad habits, we have to see them as they really are.
You see, in their most basic forms, addictions are amoral!
You need proof?
When last did you eat?
Probably you’re munching something as you’re reading this.
When last did you drink water?
When last did you take a dump in the toilet?
They are activities that your brain realizes are important for your survival!
The point is that addictions are necessary for survival.
Unfortunately too, as we must be aware, addictions can go awry to the detriment of the human it was designed to help survive.
Do you have any other ideas about why everyone is addicted in one way or the other?
